SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Herbert Lee Hedgeman, who passed away on
4December 29, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was born in Chicago to Fannie Mae
6Hedgeman Lafayette on November 7, 1928; he attended Chicago
7Public Schools; he exhibited a strong entrepreneurial spirit
8and work ethic at the age of six and began his own shoeshine
9business; he briefly attended Mosley High School before joining
10the United States Army at the age of 16 and served in World War
11II; after the war ended, he remained in Germany, where he
12became fluent in the language and played the saxophone; upon
13his return, he attended Wilberforce University, where he
14pledged Kappa Alpha Psi in 1954; he married Tricka Harris in
151971; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman worked a number of jobs after his
17college graduation, including as a caseworker for the Cook
18County Department of Public Aid; the Rubloff Real Estate
19Company hired him as their first African American realtor after
20his success with building homes and integrating several
21neighborhoods; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman purchased the Sportsman Inn

1Motel in 1973 and during its renovations, received approval to
2build a 92-unit building to house veterans; during his more
3than 50 years in business, he purchased numerous properties in
4Illinois, Michigan, and Georgia; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman established the Herbert Hedgeman
6Foundation, which helped Wilberforce University students
7earning a "C" average; he sponsored the WVON's "Bob Shaw" show,
8and he gave many African Americans advice on how to go into
9business and sustain success; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was preceded in death by his
11wife, Tricka; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman is survived by his son, Kenneth
13Hedgeman; his daughters, Denita Hedgeman, Kori Scurlock, TK
14Karadzovski, and Cici Foster (Kevin); his grandchildren,
15Avante and Dante Hedgeman, and Diamond and Imani Foster; his
16great-granddaughter, Ayanna Hedgeman; and many other relatives
17and friends; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Herbert Lee Hedgeman and extend our sincere condolences to his
21family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
22further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Herbert Hedgeman as an expression of
3our deepest sympathy.
