SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Endometriosis is a disease of the female
3reproductive system; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to that
5normally found in the uterus begins to grow outside of the
6uterus, leading to chronic, debilitating pelvic pain; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Endometriosis is a leading cause of female
8infertility; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Endometriosis affects one in 10 women of
10childbearing age in the United States; and
 
11    WHEREAS, On average, there is a 10-year delay from the
12onset of symptoms to the final diagnosis of Endometriosis; and
 
13    WHEREAS, U.S. Endometriosis patients were hospitalized
14105,123 days in 2010 because of their disease; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Women with Endometriosis can lose 11 hours per
16work week through lost productivity and absenteeism due to
17pain; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Fifty-one percent of Endometriosis patients

1report that their disease detrimentally affects their job; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The estimated total annual societal burden of
3Endometriosis-related symptoms in the U.S. is $56 billion, or
4$10,824 per patient; and
 
5    WHEREAS, There is no cure for Endometriosis; and
 
6    WHEREAS, More research is necessary to develop treatment
7options to manage this debilitating disease; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Traditionally, providers have focused on managing
9the associated pain with oral contraceptives, progestins,
10danazol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
11opioids, and GnRH agonists, many of which are not specifically
12indicated for the treatment of Endometriosis; in more extensive
13cases, surgical interventions (e.g., laparotomy or
14laparoscopy) are often pursued and may not be curative for all
15individuals; and
 
16    WHEREAS, More research is needed to find additional
17treatment options to manage this debilitating disease; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Education is important for promoting awareness of
19symptoms and early detection and diagnosis of Endometriosis;
20therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March of
32018 as "Endometriosis Awareness Month" in the State of
4Illinois and encourage the State to observe the month with
5related awareness and educational campaigns; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Public Health is
7encouraged to make available online resources and current
8information on Endometriosis, including disease prevalence,
9symptoms, and treatment options; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11delivered to the Director of Public Health.
