| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Paul Everett Smith of Urbana, who passed | 4 | | away on February 4, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Paul Smith was born in Roodhouse to Carrie | 6 | | (McGhehey) and William Oscar Smith on May 7, 1921; he attended | 7 | | Roodhouse schools and was baptized in the Illinois River at | 8 | | Hillview in 1937; he served in the United States Merchant | 9 | | Marines following World War II, taking thousands of horses to a | 10 | | devastated Europe; he attended Shurtleff College in Alton and | 11 | | received his bachelor's degree in science education from the | 12 | | University of Illinois in 1948 and a master's degree in 1950; | 13 | | he married Ruth E. Sprankel on December 24, 1950; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Paul Smith taught physics and chemistry at Urbana | 15 | | High School from 1948 until 1970; in 1958, he and his wife | 16 | | started an apartment rental business in Champaign-Urbana, | 17 | | which still operates today; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Paul Smith was a member of the Illinois Physics | 19 | | Teachers Association, the Illinois Chemistry Teachers | 20 | | Association, and the National Physics and Chemistry | 21 | | Association; he was a founding member of the Central Illinois | 22 | | Apartment Association; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Paul Smith was an active member of Twin City Bible | 2 | | Church for over 50 years; he enjoyed working, reading the | 3 | | Bible, helping others, and being with his family; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Paul Smith was preceded in death by his wife, | 5 | | Ruth; his parents; three brothers; and one sister; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Paul Smith is survived by his daughters, Christine | 7 | | Gunther (Jim) and Karen Colvill (Jeff); his grandchildren, | 8 | | Steve Colvill (Olivia), Jenny Colvill, and Jamie Gunther; and | 9 | | his brother, Philip Smith; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 12 | | Paul Everett Smith, and extend our sincere condolences to his | 13 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 14 | | further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to the family of Paul Smith as an expression of our | 17 | | deepest sympathy.
