| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of James Earl "Jimmy" Harlan, who passed | 4 | | away on May 14, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, James Harlan was born in Meridian, Mississippi to | 6 | | Pastor Herbert Sr. and Florence Harlan on December 16, 1946; he | 7 | | attended Lawson Grammar School and Harrison High School in | 8 | | Chicago; he was a member of the Greater Galilee Baptist Church | 9 | | of Chicago and joined the U.S. Army in 1967; he served during | 10 | | the Vietnam War as a specialist 4th class military policeman; | 11 | | he married Debra on December 22, 1985; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, James Harlan retired after many years at Sanford | 13 | | Inc.; after retirement, he worked at Proviso East High School | 14 | | until 2015, where he was affectionately known as "Old School"; | 15 | | and | 16 | | WHEREAS, James Harlan was the co-founder of Answer Inc.; he | 17 | | was president of the Just for Men support group and assistant | 18 | | to the cancer support group at the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans | 19 | | Administration Hospital; he was recognized as a veteran by the | 20 | | Cook County Commissioner; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, James Harlan was a member of the Jordan Temple |

| 1 | | Baptist Church in Hillside; he enjoyed watching sports, | 2 | | especially football and basketball; he also enjoyed "stepping" | 3 | | with his wife and spending time with his family and friends; | 4 | | and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, James Harlan was preceded in death by his parents | 6 | | and his brother, Herbert Harlan Jr.; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, James Harlan is survived by his wife, Debra Vines; | 8 | | his sons, Mark (Temekia) Shambry and Jason Harlan; his brother, | 9 | | Bill Harlan; extended family member, John (LaVonne) Baggett; | 10 | | and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends; | 11 | | therefore, be it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 13 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 14 | | James Earl "Jimmy" Harlan, and extend our sincere condolences | 15 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | 16 | | it further
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to the family of James Harlan as an expression of our | 19 | | deepest sympathy.
