SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Lenin "Doc" Pellegrino on May 3, 2018 at
4the age of 92; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was born on August 27, 1925 in
6Chicago to Italian parents; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino obtained both his undergraduate
8and medical degrees from the University of Illinois; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was a 10th Mountain Division ski
10trooper stationed in Italy during World War II and was awarded
11two Purple Hearts for his service there; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino practiced medicine in Chicago
13for over three decades, where he had offices in Garfield Park,
14Oak Park, and Austin; he often did not charge patients who
15could not afford to pay the fee; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was an outspoken civil rights
17activist throughout his entire life, marching with Dr. Martin
18Luther King Jr. in the 1960s; he also served as a physician for
19Dr. King's health clinic in North Lawndale, where he provided
20free medical care against the wishes of the American Medical

1Association; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino founded the Kingston Mines in
31968, transforming it into one of Chicago's most famed blues
4clubs; Kingston Mines has attracted the greatest blues
5performers in Chicago, as well as several celebrity patrons,
6throughout the years; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was a longtime, active member of
8the Third Unitarian Church in Austin, and was known as an
9incredibly charitable man, raising money for causes that were
10important to him; he hosted fundraisers for the Pathfinders
11Prevention Education Fund and was recognized for helping the
12organization provide HIV/AIDS prevention education,
13counseling, and training for African-Americans living on the
14West Side of Chicago; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was a loving father to his
16children Laura, Donna, Frank, and Lisa; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino is survived by his children,
18Laura, Donna, Frank, and Lisa; his nieces and nephews; and
19grandchildren and great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Lenin "Doc" Pellegrino, and extend our sincere condolences to
2his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Lenin Pellegrino as an expression of
6our deepest sympathy.
