SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Carl Peter Mattioda of Spring Valley,
4formerly of Streator, who passed away on June 2, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioda was born in Spring Valley to Joseph
6and Mollie (Muzzarelli) Mattioda on August 20, 1929; he
7graduated from St. Bede Academy in 1947, St. Bede Junior
8College in 1949, and then Loyola Medical School; he married
9Alice Marie Crisp in Hagerstown, Maryland on May 4, 1957; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioda established his OB/GYN practice in
11Streator in 1963; for the next 52 years, he compassionately
12cared for the health of women and brought thousands of babies
13into the world; he was known to be very compassionate; in
14reference to being a doctor, he noted, "There's a lot more to
15medicine. Maybe you could help them with problems besides
16medical just by listening"; he never got tired of hearing a
17baby's first cry and said, "It was the most exciting moment
18from the first baby to the last"; he retired on his 86th
19birthday in August 2015; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioda served in the United States Navy
21Reserves; he was a longtime former member of St. Anthony's
22Parish in Streator and was currently a member of the Nativity

1of Our Lord Parish in Spring Valley; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioda enjoyed playing solitaire and
3watching sports; he was a dedicated fan of the University of
4Notre Dame football; he was devoted to reciting the rosary
5every day; he loved his faith, his family, and being a
6dedicated physician; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioda was preceded in death by his parents;
8and his wife, Alice; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioda is survived by his daughters, Maureen
10(James Sr.) Polster and Molliann (Jody) Gualandri; his son,
11Mark (Mary) Mattioda; his grandchildren, Courtney (Edward)
12Ator, Carlee (Matthew) Frkol, James (fiancee Paige Polzen)
13Polster Jr., Paul, Joseph, Kyle, and Kurt Mattioda, Christopher
14(Nicole) Mattioda, Elizabeth (Jeff) Stenoish, Dr. Katie (Ryan)
15Crawley, Joseph (Elizabeth) Gualandri, and Michael and Anna
16Gualandri; his great-grandchildren, Alice and Jack Ator,
17Shaylee, Luke, and Dominic Mattioda, Abigail and Emma Stenoish,
18and Ezekiel, Lillian, and Ignatius Gualandri; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Dr. Carl Peter Mattioda and extend our sincere condolences to
22his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it

2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Dr. Mattioda as an expression of our
4deepest sympathy.
