SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Harold W. Sundelius, Ph.D., K.N.O. of Moline, who passed away on June 17, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was born in Escanaba, Michigan to Herbert A. and Caroline Johnson Sundelius on July 6, 1930; he graduated Magna cum Laude from Augustana College in 1952; upon graduation from Augustana, he received a Fulbright Fellowship, which enabled him to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oslo in Norway; once he returned, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Japan and Korea from 1953 until 1955; after completing his military service, he resumed his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his master of science and Ph.D.; he was also awarded the C.K. Keith Fellowship and was named a University Fellow; he married Charlene Swanson on May 21, 1955; and

WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius joined the U.S. Geological Survey and served in military geology and Eastern U.S. regional geology from 1959 until 1965; he then joined the faculty of Wittenberg University in Ohio, where he became an associate dean, professor, and chair of geology; in 1957, he returned to Augustana as a professor of geology, vice president and dean; he retired as professor emeritus of geology in 1995; and

WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was a fellow in the Geological Society of America and held many other professional memberships, including the Society of Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Society of Economic Geologists, and the Rotary Club of Rock Island; he was proud of his Swedish heritage and served as President of the Augustana Historical Society; he was a member of the American Scandinavian Association at Augustana College and served on the board of the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center; for his leadership in academics and the promotion of ties between the United States and Sweden, he was accorded the rank of Knight in the Royal Order of the North Star (Kungliga Nordstjarneorden) by his Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in 1996; and

WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene; and

WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius is survived by his daughters, Karen (Gary Risch) Sundelius and Kristine (Brad) Lundine; his grandchildren, Andrew (Cassie) and Matthew Pappas, and Sarah, Anna, Elizabeth, and Mark Lundine; his great-grandson, Drew Pappas; and his sister, Lorian Sundelius Swanson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Harold W. Sundelius, Ph.D., K.N.O. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harold Sundelius as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
