SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Philip H. Barry of Elk Grove Village, who passed away on July 2, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Philip Barry was born in Chicago to English and Greek parents in 1922; he graduated from Schurz High School in 1939; he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp during the Great Depression; in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Signal Corps; he then served in the United States Air Force during World War II, where he maintained radar equipment as a technical sergeant in Italy and Germany; he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado; and

WHEREAS, Philip Barry was employed by Teletype, now At&T, as an engineer for 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Philip Barry moved to the then year-old town of Elk Grove Village with his wife in June 1957 and immediately became involved with civic groups; in 1958, he was appointed village engineer; he was a charter member of the Elk Grove Village Historical Society and served as a long-time board member, including a tenure as board president; he helped lead efforts to relocate and renovate an 1856 farmhouse and 1858 barn, the Schuette-Biermann Farmhouse Museum, and used his carpentry skills to work on exhibits; he was a 35-year member of the Sheila Ray Senior Center, where he conducted a current events program, moderated the "Memories and More" program, supervised the wood shop and workroom, sang with the adult center choir, and participated in the Senior Olympics program with Elk Grove High School Students; and

WHEREAS, Philip Barry was an early member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, where, for many years, he was the volunteer Sunday School principal; he was a member of the Lions Club and the VFW and taught high school junior achievement students; he was president of the Des Plaines Valley Geological Society for eight years and was the first to have the idea for a bridge over Higgins Road, linking parts of the Ned Brown Forest Preserve; and

WHEREAS, Philip Barry was a word traveler, historian, and geologist; he had many interests, including forestry, farming, carpentry, science, mathematics, and languages; he will be forever remembered by all who knew him; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Philip H. Barry and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Philip Barry as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
