SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Philip H. Barry of Elk Grove Village, who
4passed away on July 2, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Philip Barry was born in Chicago to English and
6Greek parents in 1922; he graduated from Schurz High School in
71939; he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp during the
8Great Depression; in 1941, he enlisted in the United States
9Signal Corps; he then served in the United States Air Force
10during World War II, where he maintained radar equipment as a
11technical sergeant in Italy and Germany; he earned a Bachelor
12of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of
13Colorado; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Philip Barry was employed by Teletype, now At&T,
15as an engineer for 40 years; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Philip Barry moved to the then year-old town of
17Elk Grove Village with his wife in June 1957 and immediately
18became involved with civic groups; in 1958, he was appointed
19village engineer; he was a charter member of the Elk Grove
20Village Historical Society and served as a long-time board
21member, including a tenure as board president; he helped lead
22efforts to relocate and renovate an 1856 farmhouse and 1858

1barn, the Schuette-Biermann Farmhouse Museum, and used his
2carpentry skills to work on exhibits; he was a 35-year member
3of the Sheila Ray Senior Center, where he conducted a current
4events program, moderated the "Memories and More" program,
5supervised the wood shop and workroom, sang with the adult
6center choir, and participated in the Senior Olympics program
7with Elk Grove High School Students; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Philip Barry was an early member of the Lutheran
9Church of the Holy Spirit, where, for many years, he was the
10volunteer Sunday School principal; he was a member of the Lions
11Club and the VFW and taught high school junior achievement
12students; he was president of the Des Plaines Valley Geological
13Society for eight years and was the first to have the idea for
14a bridge over Higgins Road, linking parts of the Ned Brown
15Forest Preserve; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Philip Barry was a word traveler, historian, and
17geologist; he had many interests, including forestry, farming,
18carpentry, science, mathematics, and languages; he will be
19forever remembered by all who knew him; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Philip H. Barry and extend our sincere condolences to his
23family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
