SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of United States Army Ranger Sergeant Joshua
4P. Rodgers of Bloomington, who was killed in action in
5Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan on April 27, 2017; he was 22
6years old; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers was born in Bloomington to Kevin and
8Vonda Coulter Rodgers on August 22, 1994; he attended
9Northpoint Elementary School, Kingsley Junior High School, and
10Normal Community High School; he enlisted in the United States
11Army after graduation in May of 2013 and completed One Station
12Unit Training as an infantryman at Fort Benning; following
13completion of the basic airborne course, he graduated from
14Ranger Assessment and Selection Program One, also at Fort
15Benning; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers was assigned to 2nd Platoon, C
17Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment where he served as
18a machine gunner, light machine gunner, gun team leader, and
19ranger fire team leader; he was deployed three times to
20Afghanistan and earned the Ranger Tab, the Parachutist Badge,
21and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge Expert-Rifle; he was
22also awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct
23Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan

1Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, the Global War on
2Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer
3Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, and
4the NATO Medal; he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart
5and the Bronze Star Medal with Valor; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers was preceded in death by his
7grandfather, Mike Rodgers; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers is survived by his parents, Kevin and
9Vonda Rodgers; his sisters, Emily Rodgers and Hannah (Nathan
10Lloilo) Rodgers; his brother, Ashton Rodgers; his niece,
11Victoria Rodgers; his grandparents, Russ and Diana Coulter, and
12Christine Rodgers; his aunts, uncles, and cousins, Duane,
13Trish, Makayla, and Delanie Fisher, Joe and Carrie Tyler, Cecil
14and Charlie Rodgers, and Dan, Marcie, and Charlotte Rodgers;
15therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18United States Army Ranger Sergeant Joshua P. Rodgers, and
19extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all
20who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Sgt. Rodgers as an expression of our
