SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became
3law in 1990 prohibiting discrimination against individuals
4with disabilities in all areas of public life; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Increased ADA awareness promotes equality and
6fairness within the United States for those who live life with
7a disability; and
 
8    WHEREAS, One of the largest provisions of the ADA is to
9provide access to public facilities so those with disabilities
10are able to fully participate and enjoy the facilities without
11concern about accessibility; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In 1979, Illinois created the Illinois Human
13Rights Act forbidding discrimination based on sex, age, race,
14color, religion, arrest record, marital status, sexual
15orientation, physical and mental disability, citizenship
16status (with regard to employment), national origin, ancestry,
17unfavorable military discharge, familial status (with respect
18to real estate transactions), military status, sexual
19harassment, and orders of protection; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Illinois is committed to fighting discrimination,
21creating the Illinois Human Rights Commission to make impartial

1determinations of whether there has been unlawful
2discrimination as defined by the Illinois Human Rights Act; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Illinois has approximately 1.4 million people
4with a reported disability; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Providing access to seating and parking for those
6with disabilities creates ease of access to attend events and
7enjoy the facilities across the State; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ensuring access to public locations benefits all
9citizens by promoting inclusivity and diversity; therefore, be
10it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we encourage the State
13of Illinois and all public facilities to faithfully follow
14federal Americans with Disabilities Act laws and the Illinois
15Human Rights Act to ensure that events are accessible to all
16people with disabilities across the State.
