SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mary Frances Draper, who passed away on
4January 21, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mary Draper was born to Judge James V. and Frances
6M. Bartley on November 4, 1922 and raised in Joliet; she
7attended Cathedral Of St. Raymond Grade School, St. Francis
8Academy, and St. Francis College (University of St. Francis) in
9Joliet; she graduated from the University of Illinois in
10Champaign-Urbana in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts in English
11Literature; she wed Addison Dent Draper on September 4, 1942;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, Mary Draper worked as an assistant at the Peru
14Public Library, as an aide to State Rep. Donald Anderson, a
15registered social worker for the Horizons Center in
16LaSalle-Peru, and with her husband, ran an outdoor education
17program for middle school students, "Natures Classroom", in
18LaSalle-Peru; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Mary Draper taught CCD (Confraternity of
20Christian Doctrine), procured food and clothing for local
21migrant workers, volunteered for UNICEF, and was active in the
22Christian Family Movement; and

1    WHEREAS, Mary Draper enjoyed literature and poetry,
2politics and social justice, caring for physically and
3intellectually challenged individuals, gardening and the
4environment, life-long learning, and elder hostels; she also
5liked hot air ballooning and cross country skiing; well into
6her 9th decade, she swam daily at the YMCA and did volunteer
7work with guide dogs for the blind and for several local
8shelters and agencies in Martinez, California; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Mary Draper loved social gatherings where she was
10often asked to perform oratorical ditties, musical parodies,
11and narrations from Mother Goose; following her husband's death
12in 1985, she traveled in Europe, Central America, and to
13national parks; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Mary Draper enjoyed the arts, visiting museums,
15and attending theater and concerts; she loved camping,
16swimming, hiking, and spending time at the family's cabin on
17the Magnetawan River in Ontario, Canada; after her retirement,
18she moved to Martinez, California to be near her children; she
19lived for periods with her various children, enjoying a rich
20and varied life with her extended family; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Mary Draper was preceded in death by her parents;
22her brother, James M. Bartley; her sister, Nancy Hall

1(Bartley); her son, Patrick A. Draper; her daughter, Frances
2Eugenie "Genie" Draper; and her infant granddaughter, Sarah
3Inez Draper; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Mary Draper is survived by her children, Michael
5A. Draper, Robyn Draper-Praetz (Peter), Susan Draper
6(Michael), Peter Bartley Draper, Paul J. Draper (Jean), Miriam
7A. Goldfien (Robert), Greg C. Draper (Marcey), Allison D.
8Draper (Jeff), and Jonathon A. Draper (Ginny); her
9daughter-in-law, Lisa; 24 grandchildren; eight
10great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; many
11friends; and her loving caregiver, Terry; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Mary Frances Draper, and extend our sincere condolences to her
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Mary Draper as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
