SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Herbert Wood of Port Byron; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Wood was born in Tipperary, Iowa on August 8, 1922; he lost his mother when he was less than a year old and was cared for by his grandparents until becoming the son of Vaniellia and Fagan Wood and moving to Bend, Oregon; he graduated from Bend High School; when World War II broke out, he enlisted in the United States Navy and became a fighter pilot, flying a Grumman Hellcat off the USS Yorktown, VF88 over Japan; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Wood worked as an international account manager for AT&T, representing the John Deere Communications Division; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Wood had a love of flying; he was a member of the Quiet Birdmen and started the Quad Cities Air Show with Dwayne Evans in the 1960s; he was an avid hunter, competitive skeet shooter, field trail participant, and pool shark; and

WHEREAS, Community service involvement was important to Herb Wood; he served with the Lions Club, the Oak Grove Community Center, the Arrowhead Ranch, and Youth at Risk; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Wood was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Wood is survived by his children, Melanie Wood, John (Nancy) Wood, and MaryBeth Wood; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his special friends, Dan Murphy, Doug Carlstrom, and Anita Evans; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Herbert Wood, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Herbert Wood as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
