SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Cook County Commissioner Robert Steele, who passed away on June 19, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele was born on June 29, 1961; he graduated from Morgan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Information Systems and as a Fellow of Leadership Greater Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele was a life-long Chicagoan, a North Lawndale resident, and a community activist; he strived to provide better solutions in the face of adversity; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele took office as Cook County Commissioner - 2nd District in December of 2006; he was elected President Pro-Tempore of the Cook County Board of Commissioners in December of 2010; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele served on the Contract Compliance Committees for the Cook County Board and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County; he also served as Vice-Chair of the Cook County Health and Hospitals and on the Environmental Control and Forest Preserve District Finance Committees; he sponsored the Cook County Contract Management Ordinance, the Unlawful Filing of Fraudulent Lien Ordinance, and the Electronic Compiled Data Ordinance; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele served on several local and national boards; he was a member of the Mt. Sinai Hospital Board of Directors, the Government Technology Foundation Advisory Board, the Gift of Hope Board of Directors, and President of the Board of Trustees of Frazier Preparatory Academy; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele was a member of the board of the National Association of Counties Officials (NACo); he served as President of the National Association of Black County Officials (NABCO) from 2008-2010, most recently on its Board of Directors; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele was a member of Lawndale Christian Church and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, Commissioner Steele was a family man and a proud, dedicated father of three children; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Cook County Commissioner Robert Steele, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Commissioner Steele as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
