SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Joseph Matthew Saban of Lakewood, who passed away on September 29, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Joe Saban was born in South Elgin to Joseph and Dragica (Stilinovic) Saban on December 31, 1946; and

WHEREAS, Joe Saban began his career in education, teaching science to junior high and then high school students; after several years of teaching, he transitioned to the position of Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Finance at District 155 in Crystal Lake; he later became Superintendent of Schools for the district and earned his Doctorate of Education; during his tenure, he facilitated the building of Prairie Ridge High School; after retiring from District 155, he became a Professor at Northern Illinois University, where he trained masters and doctoral students in educational leadership; and

WHEREAS, Joe Saban had a favorite saying; he believed in "doing what's right for kids"; he lived his life that way, both for the children of his community and his family; he liked nothing better than spending time with his children and grandchildren; his favorite moments were spending time on the beach, walking along a trail in a national forest, or sitting with a grandchild nestled in his lap; he was known for his quick wit and never missed an opportunity to make a moment fun; his home was always filled with laughter; and

WHEREAS, Joe Saban was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Steve (Delores) Saban and Katherine Saban; and

WHEREAS, Joe Saban is survived by his wife Bonnie (Miller) Saban; his children, Matt (Julie) Saban, Tom Saban, Julia Saban, Jason (Tara) Strait, and Matt (Laura) Strait; his grandchildren, Madelyn and Boedi Newsom, Genevieve and Warren Strait, and Barret and Tillie Strait; his brother, John (Nicole) Saban; his sisters-in-law, Colleen (Ron) Mann and Tracy Miller; and twenty-two nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dr. Joseph Matthew Saban and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Joe Saban as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
