SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General Assembly pays honor and respect to those individuals who have served our country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation; and

WHEREAS, Ronald E. Powers was born on June 12, 1948 and was raised in Macoupin County; and

WHEREAS, Ronald Powers joined the United States Army and served as a Private First Class with the 9th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, Combat Support Company; and

WHEREAS, PFC Powers began his tour of duty in South Vietnam on September 5, 1968; and

WHEREAS, On October 4, 1968, PFC Powers was killed in action while serving in the Dinh Tuong Province in South Vietnam; and

WHEREAS, PFC Powers was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal; his name can be found on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 41w, line 7; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Illinois Route 16 from its intersection with Illinois Route 111 to its intersection with US Route 67 as the "PFC Ronald E. Powers Memorial Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of the name "PFC Ronald E. Powers Memorial Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to the family of PFC Powers and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
