SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of former United States Representative and
4former Illinois State Representative Gale Schisler of London
5Mills, who passed away on February 2, 2020; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler was born in Indian Point Township,
7Knox County to Claire D. and Doris A. (Jacobs) Schisler on
8March 2, 1933; he attended Indian Point School through the
9eighth grade; he graduated from Abingdon High School in 1951;
10he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served from 1952 to 1955;
11he married Carolyn Cochran in November 1957; they had three
12children and later divorced in 1977; he married Gloria Waller
13Richter in Springfield on July 26, 1980; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler earned a bachelor of science degree
15in education from Western Illinois University in 1959; he
16earned a master's degree from Northeast Missouri State Teachers
17College (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, Missouri
18in 1962; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler worked as a teacher and principal in
20London Mills; he knew all of his students and wanted them all
21to achieve to the best of their abilities; and

1    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler was elected to the U.S. Congress in
2November 1964; he served on the House Committee on Science and
3Aeronautics as well as the sub-committee on the Manned Space
4Flight, among others; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Upon his return to Illinois, Rep. Schisler was
6appointed to head the Office of Intergovernmental Cooperation
7at the request of then Governor Otto Kerner Jr.; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler was elected to the Illinois House of
9Representatives in 1968 and served for 12 years; he was the
10chairman of the Agriculture Committee for six years; he also
11served on a number of other committees, including education,
12financial institutions, and conservation; he was known for
13listening to his voters and casting his votes in response to
14what the Fulton County voters indicated through their letters
15and phone calls; he was proud to help his constituents; and
 
16    WHEREAS, When he did not win reelection in 1980, Rep.
17Schisler became an assistant to the director of the State's
18Attorneys Appellate Commission; he retired at the end of 1986;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler was involved in a number of
21organizations, including the Former Members of Congress, the
22NRA, the American Legion, and the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse

1Breed Association; he was also a 32nd degree Mason and 50-year
2member of the London Masonic Lodge #808 in Silvis; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler was known to be a cowboy at heart;
4for a few months each year, he took his horses and headed to
5Glenwood, New Mexico; he also enjoyed hunting, fishing,
6reading, and taking trips with his wife, Gloria; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler was preceded in death by his
8parents; his daughters, Kimberly Jo Schisler and Jill P.
9Sherwood; his grandson, Aaron Barnes; and his brother, Roger
10Schisler; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Rep. Schisler is survived by his wife; his son,
12Kurt Schisler; his stepdaughter, Tamara Richter (Bob -
13deceased) Burris; his granddaughter, Elicia (Justin) Munson;
14his grandson, Corey Barnes; his great-grandchildren, Melody
15Barnes, Samantha, Tyler Munson, Connor Munson, Emma Barnes, and
16David Barnes; his sisters, Yvonne Lewis, Jody Dolan, Anita
17(Brian) Hickok, and Jeri Schisler; and his several cousins,
18nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21former United States Representative and former Illinois State
22Representative Gale Schisler and extend our sincere

1condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
2him; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Rep. Schisler as an expression of
5our deepest sympathy.
