SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Deacon Jack M. Kettering of Rock Island, who passed away on June 16, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Jack Kettering was born in Rock Island on August 8, 1932; at 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea; after his service, he finished high school and went on to attend St. Ambrose College on the GI Bill; Jack married Marian Leenknecht on May 4, 1957; and

WHEREAS, Jack Kettering became a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and often carried additional jobs to support his growing family; when the Permanent Diaconate was established, Jack was called to serve the Diocese of Peoria and was ordained on November 18, 1979; he engaged in jail and hospital ministry, coordinated religious education programs, visited shut-ins, delivered homilies, and assisted at Mass; later in life, Jack deeply enjoyed working as the maintenance Supervisor at the Circa '21 theater; and

WHEREAS, In his middle age, Jack Kettering developed a passion for running and completed his first marathon at the age of 45; he loved road races, marathons, and triathlons and was even invited to compete in the Ironman Competition; and

WHEREAS, Jack Kettering was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dick Kettering; his son, Stephen; his daughter, Katherine; and his granddaughter, Heather; and

WHEREAS, Jack Kettering is survived by his wife, Marian; his brother, Donald; his sons, Joe (Rose), Tom (Kim), and John (Don); his daughter, Jane; his eight grandchildren; his six great-grandchildren; and his great-grandchild who is on the way; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Deacon Jack M. Kettering and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Jack Kettering as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
