SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jerome Herman "Jerry" Onan, who passed
4away on February 14, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan was born in Waukegan to Thomas and
6Ashen Onan on November 13, 1934; he graduated from St. Joseph
7Grade School in 1948 and then attended Waukegan Township High
8School, where he excelled in wrestling and football and his
9studies; he attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa on
10an athletic scholarship for wrestling and football; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan graduated from Cornell College in 1957
12and entered the U.S. Navy in 1958; he attended Officer
13Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign; he was sent to
14the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia and then
15assigned as Supply Officer USS Forest Royal DD-872; his next
16assignment was Supply Officer NAS in Lakehurst, New Jersey; he
17was released from active duty in 1961 with the rank of
18Lieutenant; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan worked in Chicago, New York City, and
20Florida for the US Testing Company; he resigned to attend the
21Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where
22he received a Master of Business Administration; after

1graduating, he joined the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)
2in New York City; he eventually returned home and joined his
3brothers Jim and John at Onan Garages in Waukegan, where he
4worked for many years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan ran for Mayor of Waukegan in 1989; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan practiced Yoga and spent many hours in
7meditation; he enjoyed gardening and became a Master Gardener
8through the University of Illinois extension in Grayslake; he
9also enjoyed intellectual conversation about any topic; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan devotedly cared for his mother during
11her last days; he and his niece Cindy shared a close
12relationship and collaborated on writing and publishing a book,
13the Magic of Self-Discipline; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan was preceded in death by his brother
15and sister-in-law, John (Eloise) Onan, and his parents, Thomas
16and Ashen Onan; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Jerry Onan is survived by his brothers and
18sisters-in-law, Thomas (Harriet) and James (Linda) Onan; his
19nieces and nephews, Cynthia (Thomas) Cramer, Robert (Amy) Onan,
20Deborah (Dominic) Vivona, Mary (John) Lohmann, James Onan, John
21Onan, Joseph (Loretta) Onan, Gina Onan, and Thomas Rocko

1(Jeanne) Onan; his long-time buddy, Art Wancho; and numerous
2grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins, and friends; therefore,
3be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6Jerome Herman "Jerry" Onan and extend our sincere condolences
7to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
8it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Jerry Onan as an expression of our
11deepest sympathy.
