SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Harriet McLaughlin Rose of Mahomet, who
4passed away on August 5, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was born in Sparta to Harry and Nina
6(Lindsay) McLaughlin on February 23, 1934; she attended Sparta
7High School, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the
8band and was nominated to the homecoming court as a freshman;
9her family moved to Fairfield, where she finished high school
10and was in the band and was the cheerleading captain; she was
11also awarded the 4-H Outstanding Member Award for the State of
12Illinois, which earned her a trip to the national 4-H
13convention; she was instrumental in creating the Fairfield
14water safety life guard program that still continues; she
15attended the University of Illinois, where she was a member of
16the Pi Beta Phi sorority, was on the women's synchronized
17swimming team, and was nominated for homecoming queen as a
18freshman; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose began a career in higher education at
20the University of Michigan; she then became the assistant to
21the dean of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, a post she held
22for almost half of her career; in Jacksonville, she also
23developed a lifelong passion for tennis and was known to drop

1everything to watch a grand slam final; and
 
2    WHEREAS, As a single mom, Harriet Rose returned to school
3and completed a bachelor's degree from the University of
4Illinois Springfield and a master's degree in business
5administration; in 1986, she began working as an administrative
6director at Eastern Illinois University, where she retired in
72002; during her Charleston years, she was a proud member of
8the OBS ladies club, taught adjunct business classes at Lake
9Land College, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was knowledgeable about classical
12French antiques and had a keen eye for decorating and for all
13things fashion; she loved the arts, particularly art museums
14and Broadway shows; her other passion was anything related to
15the news and current events; she was a lifelong Republican and
16chair of the Republican Women's Club of Morgan County during
17the Cold War; she traveled extensively during this time period
18of her life, including a trip to Russia as a guest of the
19Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In retirement, Harriet Rose enjoyed attending the
21U of I Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's classes on current
22events and writing, which led to her composing a book for her
23family, My Southern Illinois Heritage. A Memoir; she attended

1many Illinois Alumni Association and Eastern Illinois work
2alumni events; she loved and very much enjoyed her
3grandchildren, to whom she will forever be known as "HaHa"; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was preceded in death by her parents
5and her sister, Nellie Wineland; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose is survived by her son, Illinois
7State Senator Chapin (Camille) Rose; her grandchildren, Jack,
8Annie, Kira, and Grace; her sister, Mabelle Wexler; her
9brother-in-law, Gene Wineland; her nephews, Tom (Audrey)
10Wineland and Tom Hirte; her niece, Stacy Given; and numerous
11other extended family members; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Harriet McLaughlin Rose and extend our sincere condolences to
15her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Harriet Rose as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
