SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Sammie L. Garrett Parker of North
4Chicago, who passed away on August 28, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi to
6John and Freddie Garrett on September 2, 1930; she was a member
7of Mt. Nebo Methodist Church in Pontotoc, where she
8participated in the Children's Choir and was a Leader and
9Sunday School Teacher; she attended Mississippi Industrial
10College in Holly Springs, Mississippi and married Andrew
11Galloway; after his passing, she married John L. Parker; she
12moved to North Chicago in 1956; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was employed by the Downey Veteran
14Administration Hospital in Lake County; she retired in 1988;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, In retirement, Sammie Parker turned her interest
17to her community; she volunteered for Meals-On-Wheels and was
18an active member of the Lake County Community Choir,
19ministering in song to area nursing homes; she was known for
20showing compassion and personally meeting the needs of others
21by providing financial support, transportation, and shopping
22assistance; she was also a member of the Quarter Century Club

1and served as a Lake County election judge for many years; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was a member of Mt. Sinai
3Institutional Baptist Church, where she served for 63 years;
4she was involved with the Young Matrons, Ruth Circle, and the
5Vacation Bible School; she served as Children's Sunday School
6Teacher and was a member and vice president of the Mother's
7Ministry and president of the Senior Choir; she was also a
8member and treasurer of the Lake County Chapter of Church Women
9United; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was preceded in death by her
11parents; her husbands, Andrew Galloway and John L. Parker; her
12son, Jon L. Parker Jr.; her brothers, Robert, Lee, Shelby,
13Otis, George, Myron, and John Garrett; her sisters, Clara
14Hillman, Idella Hollis, Mary Austin, and Frankie Stewart; her
15grandson, David E. Brewton; and her great-granddaughter, Ivy
16Marie Sanchez White; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Sammie Parker is survived by her daughters, Jo
18Anne (Ernest) Brewton and Myrtle (James) White; her
19daughter-in-law, Carolyn Parker; her brother-in-law, Charles
20(Verna) Parker; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;
21numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends; and her
22special nieces, Ernestine Dave, Vanise McGill, Ruby Williams,
23Jaqueline Garrett-Parsons, and Zen Owens; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Sammie L. Garrett Parker and extend our sincere condolences to
4her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Sammie Parker as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
