SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Martin J. "Marty" Wieland, D.D.S. of Bloomington, who passed away on October 31, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wieland was born in Bloomington to Martin H. and Margaret Walsh Wieland on April 21, 1929; he graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1947 and earned his dental degree from St. Louis University in 1953; he served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Boxer from 1953 to 1955; after completing his military service, he returned to Bloomington and married Margaret Ann Murray at Holy Trinity Church on June 29, 1957; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wieland practiced dentistry in Bloomington for 46 years; he was a long-time member of the American Dental Association and the McLean County Dental Society; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wieland retired to Florida in 2001 and married Marie Lawenda at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church in Sarasota on August 10, 2002; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wieland was a member of the Young Men's Club and was the first president of the Holy Trinity Parish Council; he avidly followed the Chicago Cubs and especially enjoyed their 2016 season; he loved golf and was proud of his hole-in-one at the age of 72; he was a special person, a devoted husband, and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he lived his life with kindness, humility, and integrity and always showed compassion to his family, friends, and patients; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wieland was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret; his second wife, Marie; his parents; his cousins, Dave and Frank Brady; and his lifelong friends, Paula Downey Brady, and Roger and Diane Lehman; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wieland is survived by his children, Kathleen (Alan) Brown, Martin Jr. (D.J.) Wieland, Dr. John (Kathy) Wieland, Molly (Steve) Moews, Trish (Chris) Roark, Michael (Michon) Wieland, and Melissa (Steve) Steinman; his grandchildren, Molly and Annie Brown, Jenna Wieland, Sean (Kate) Wieland, Drew Wieland, Maureen (Kevin) Brady, Maggie, Patrick, Clare, Brian, and Bridget Wieland, Mary Kate (Patrick) O'Brien, Oliver and McKay Moews, Sarah Elizabeth Anderson, Sarah Ann Roark, Cassie Wieland, Faith (Quinn) Storm, Caroline Wieland, Jack (Stephanie) Steinman, and Katie Steinman; his great-grandchildren, Jack and Mary Wieland, and James and Josiah Wieland; and his lifelong friend, Mary Jane O'Rourke Brady; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Martin J. "Marty" Wieland, D.D.S. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Wieland as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
