SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
730 ILCS 5/5-4-3a new

    Amends the Unified Code of Corrections. Provides that on or before February 1, 2005 and on or before February 1 of each year thereafter, the Department of State Police shall report to the Governor and both houses of the General Assembly the following information: (1) the extent of the backlog of cases awaiting testing or awaiting DNA analysis by that Department; and (2) what measures have been and are being taken to reduce that backlog and the estimated costs or expenditures in doing so. Provides that this information reported shall be made available to the public, at the time it is reported, on the official web site of the Department of State Police. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning criminal law.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Unified Code of Corrections is amended by
5 adding Section 5-4-3a as follows:
 
6     (730 ILCS 5/5-4-3a new)
7     Sec. 5-4-3a. DNA testing backlog accountability.
8     (a) On or before February 1, 2005 and on or before February
9 1 of each year thereafter, the Department of State Police shall
10 report to the Governor and both houses of the General Assembly
11 the following information:
12         (1) the extent of the backlog of cases awaiting testing
13     or awaiting DNA analysis by that Department, including but
14     not limited to those tests conducted under Section 5-4-3,
15     as of December 31 of the previous year; and
16         (2) what measures have been and are being taken to
17     reduce that backlog and the estimated costs or expenditures
18     in doing so.
19     (b) The information reported under this Section shall be
20 made available to the public, at the time it is reported, on
21 the official web site of the Department of State Police.
 
22     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
23 becoming law.
