SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
50 ILCS 135/12

    Amends the Local Governmental Employees Political Rights Act. Adds that a member of a police department or a sheriff's department may be elected or appointed to public office and may serve in public office. Provides that if the member is not in uniform and not on duty, the member may solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters for public office. Adds that a police officer or sheriff's deputy who is elected to the Illinois General Assembly shall, upon written application to the employer, be granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or her term of office.

1     AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political
5 Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows:
 
6     (50 ILCS 135/12)
7     Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office.
8     (a) A member of any fire department, or fire protection
9 district, police department, or sheriff's department may:
10         (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve
11     in that public office if elected;
12         (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that
13     public office if appointed; and
14         (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on
15     duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters
16     for the public office for which the member is a candidate.
17     (b) A firefighter, police officer, or sheriff's deputy who
18 is elected to the Illinois General Assembly shall, upon written
19 application to the employer, be granted a leave of absence
20 without compensation during his or her term of office.
