HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are saddened to  learn of the death of
Lafayette 
4
Shaw of Danville, who passed away on February 28, 2010; and
  
 
5
    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was elected to serve on the 
6
Danville City Council in 1993; he served as alderman until 
7
1996; and
  
 
8
    WHEREAS, Prior to his service as an alderman, Lafayette 
9
Shaw served as a fixture as a custodian with the City of 
10
Danville 34 years until his retirement in 1991; in 1987, he 
11
retired from General Motors; he also worked at Crosspoint Human 
12
Services; and
  
 
13
    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a member of the Carter 
14
Metropolitan C.M.E. Church since 1946; he was a member of the 
15
church's steward board, serving as the board's chairman for 
16
about 40 years; he was president of the board of stewards for 
17
the Chicago district; he served as an usher, class leader, and 
18
trustee; he also earned an award from the Third Episcopal 
19
District for his work with the church in 2006; and
  
 
20
    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was involved in the planning of 
21
renovations to Carver Park in Danville; and

    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a Golden Gloves boxer in the 
2
1940s; and
  
 
3
    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a member of the local chapter 
4
of the NAACP, the MLK Celebration Committee, and the Illinois 
5
Elks Lodge 147; he was honored with the past grand exalted 
6
ruler degree in 1984 and also the Martin Luther King 
7
Humanitarian Award; and
  
 
8
    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was named a special deputy sheriff 
9
under Sheriff Clyde Tabor and special policeman under two 
10
mayors; and
  
 
11
    WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw will be remembered by all who knew 
12
and loved him as a passionate, confident, humorous, and strong 
13
man whose dedication to his family and his community were 
14
unmatched; therefore, be it
  
 
15
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
16
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
17
mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of 
18
Lafayette Shaw; and be it further
  
 
19
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
20
presented to the family of Lafayette Shaw as an expression of
