SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
110 ILCS 305/9  from Ch. 144, par. 30

    Amends the University of Illinois Act with respect to scholarships for the children of veterans. Provides that children of persons who served in the armed forces of the United States at any time during the siege of Beirut between June 14, 1982 and August 21, 1982 or at any time during the Grenada Conflict between October 25, 1983 and December 15, 1983 are eligible for a scholarship. Effective July 1, 2012.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The University of Illinois Act is amended by
5changing Section 9 as follows:
 
6    (110 ILCS 305/9)  (from Ch. 144, par. 30)
7    Sec. 9. Scholarships for children of veterans. For each of
8the following periods of hostilities, each county shall be
9entitled, annually, to one honorary scholarship in the
10University, for the benefit of the children of persons who
11served in the armed forces of the United States: the Civil War,
12World War I, any time between September 16, 1940 and the
13termination of World War II, any time during the national
14emergency between June 25, 1950 and January 31, 1955, any time
15during the Viet Nam conflict between January 1, 1961 and May 7,
161975, any time during the siege of Beirut between June 14, 1982
17and August 21, 1982, any time during the Grenada Conflict
18between October 25, 1983 and December 15, 1983, or any time on
19or after August 2, 1990 and until Congress or the President
20orders that persons in service are no longer eligible for the
21Southwest Asia Service Medal, Operation Enduring Freedom, and
22Operation Iraqi Freedom. Preference shall be given to the
23children of persons who are deceased or disabled. Such

1scholarships shall be granted to such pupils as shall, upon
2public examination, conducted as the board of trustees of the
3University may determine, be decided to have attained the
4greatest proficiency in the branches of learning usually taught
5in the secondary schools, and who shall be of good moral
6character, and not less than 15 years of age. Such pupils, so
7selected, shall be entitled to receive, without charge for
8tuition, instruction in any or all departments of the
9University for a term of at least 4 consecutive years. Such
10pupils shall conform, in all respects, to the rules and
11regulations of the University, established for the government
12of the pupils in attendance.

14    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 1,
152012.
