AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 1299

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 1299 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The University of Illinois Act is amended by
5changing Section 9 as follows:
 
6    (110 ILCS 305/9)  (from Ch. 144, par. 30)
7    Sec. 9. Scholarships for children of veterans. For each of
8the following periods of hostilities, each county shall be
9entitled, annually, to 6 one honorary scholarships scholarship
10in the University, for the benefit of the children of persons
11who served in the armed forces of the United States: the Civil
12War, World War I, any time between September 16, 1940 and the
13termination of World War II, any time during the national
14emergency between June 25, 1950 and January 31, 1955, any time
15during the Viet Nam conflict between January 1, 1961 and May 7,
161975, any time during the siege of Beirut between June 14, 1982

1and February 26, 1984, any time during the Grenada Conflict
2between October 25, 1983 and December 15, 1983, or any time on
3or after August 2, 1990 and until Congress or the President
4orders that persons in service are no longer eligible for the
5Southwest Asia Service Medal, Operation Enduring Freedom, and
6Operation Iraqi Freedom. Preference shall be given to the
7children of persons who are deceased or disabled. Such
8scholarships shall be granted to such pupils as shall, upon
9public examination, conducted as the board of trustees of the
10University may determine, be decided to have attained the
11greatest proficiency in the branches of learning usually taught
12in the secondary schools, and who shall be of good moral
13character, and not less than 15 years of age. Such pupils, so
14selected, shall be entitled to receive, without charge for
15tuition, instruction in any or all departments of the
16University for a term of at least 4 consecutive years. Such
17pupils shall conform, in all respects, to the rules and
18regulations of the University, established for the government
19of the pupils in attendance.

21    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 1,
222013.".
