HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is important to recognize those who contributed
3to the betterment of the State of Illinois through public
4service; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It is equally important that we do not forget the
6contributions these individuals made in improving the State of
7Illinois and the nation as a whole; and
 
8    WHEREAS, John "Doc" Davidson was born on August 31, 1924,
9in West Point, Mississippi; he was the son of the late Homer
10and Anna (Grossboll) Davidson; he married Shirley Beard on
11August 8, 1953 and is the father of 3 and the grandfather of 6;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, John "Doc" Davidson was a chiropractor by trade;
14he served in the United States Navy during World War II as a
15tail gunner and served on the USS Ticonderoga; he was a member
16and past president of the Springfield Jaycees, where he was
17honored to be one of the Jaycees' 10 Outstanding Young Men of
18America for 1954-1955; he was a member of the American
19Chiropractic Association, where he was the first recipient of
20the National Chiropractor of the Year Award in 1973; he was a
21member of the Illinois Chiropractic Society, the Masonic Shrine
22Board, and American Legion Post #32; he was a founding member

1of the Prairie State Games and a member of the Governor's
2Prayer Breakfast Committee; he was also a member of the
3Sangamon County Board of Supervisors for 13 1/2 years and
4served as the board's chair for 2 1/2 years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John "Doc" Davidson served as an Illinois State
6Senator from 1973 to 1993, representing the 50th House District
7covering Sangamon, Christian, and Montgomery Counties; his
8greatest legislative accomplishment was ensuring that the SIU
9School of Medicine was to be seated in Springfield, providing
10world-class care to the City of Springfield and surrounding
11areas; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The members of this august body believe it is
13fitting to honor John "Doc" Davidson by dedicating the section
14of Illinois Route 97 beginning at the intersection of Veterans
15Parkway in Springfield and ending at the intersection of County
16Highway 12 in Menard County as the John "Doc" Davidson Memorial
17Highway; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of
21Illinois Route 97 beginning at the intersection of Veterans
22Parkway in Springfield and ending at the intersection of County
23Highway 12 in Menard County as the John "Doc" Davidson Memorial

1Highway; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
3is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
4State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
5giving notice of the name of the John "Doc" Davidson Memorial
6Highway; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
8presented to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
9Transportation and the family of John "Doc" Davidson.
