HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Margie Jo
4Harmon of Herrin, who passed away on April 20, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was born in Greenville, Texas to
6Robert Horace and Nina Jo (Turner) Moore on April 10, 1926; she
7graduated from Central High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma in
81943 and enrolled at Oklahoma State University; she married
9Bill Harmon in a civil ceremony in Perry, Oklahoma on June 16,
101949, and again at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Stillwater,
11Oklahoma on August 13, 1949; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon and her family moved to Herrin in
13August of 1968; she landed her first teaching job at Lincoln
14School in Herrin; she taught third grade in Herrin schools for
1529 years; she was instrumental in the establishment of an
16accelerated reader program in Herrin elementary schools; she
17continued to work with the reading program after retiring from
18teaching in 1998; she received an outstanding service award
19from the Illinois Educational Association for her work with the
20Herrin IEA affiliate and for serving on the teacher union's
21board of directors; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was elected to the Herrin Community

1Unit 4 School Board in 1989 for the first of three terms; she
2was an advocate for teacher's rights and needs and for fairness
3for all sides in contract negotiations; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon and her husband were the owners of a
5successful flower and gift shop and garden center business,
6Nancy's Flowers and Gifts (now Les Marie Florist) for 15 years;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was an avid reader and a member of
9The Page Turners club; she was a charter member of the Friends
10of Herrin City Library, serving on the group's board of
11directors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was the Chairperson of the Our Lady
13of Mount Carmel's Sister Parish Project in Mulajje, Uganda,
14raising more than $112,500 to provide lunch at school for
15approximately 450 children each day; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Margie Harmon is survived by her husband, Bill;
17her children, Catherine Louise Fleck, Ruth Ellen Harmon,
18Margaret Ann (Dr. James) Petersen, Melinda Gail (Bill Cronin)
19Harmon, Mary Elizabeth Lockhart, and Matthew Preston Harmon;
20her grandchildren, Simon (Sharon) Stotler, Emily (Dave
21Cipriani) Fleck, Isabelle Petersen, Anna Lockhart, Joseph
22Petersen, August Petersen, and William Kellogg; and her

1great-grandsons, Marcus and Jacob Stotler, and Julian
2Cipriani; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5mourn the passing of Margie Jo Harmon, and extend our sincere
6condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
7her; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Margie Harmon as an expression of
10our deepest sympathy.
