HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate longtime Woodstock
4resident and former Marian Central Catholic High School
5Athletic Director, Hans Rokus, on his induction into the
6Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his
7work as a coach and as a broadcaster; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Hans Rokus was born in Wehrden, Germany and came
9to Rockford in 1953; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Hans Rokus attended St. Thomas High School in
11Rockford from 1959 to 1962, where he played basketball and
12holds the distinction of having scored the last two points for
13the school's boys basketball team before the school closed in
141963; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Hans Rokus attended Rockford Boylan High School
16for his senior year, where he continued to play basketball as a
17varsity player; and
 
18    WHEREAS, While attending Northern Illinois University,
19Hans Rokus coached two eighth grade basketball teams - St. Mary
20School in DeKalb and St. Patrick School in Rockford; and

1    WHEREAS, After graduating from college, Hans Rokus was
2hired by Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock to
3coach and to teach social studies and religion; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Hans Rokus served as the head coach for the boys
5sophomore basketball team and as the assistant boys varsity
6basketball coach at Marian Central Catholic High School for 10
7years before taking over as the boys varsity head coach and
8athletic director in 1977; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Hans Rokus coached until 1985 and retired as
10athletic director in 1992; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The broadcasting career of Hans Rokus began in the
12late 1960s with WIVS out of Crystal Lake with a Saturday
13morning show and basketball color commentary; he discontinued
14with broadcasting during his busiest coaching years and
15ultimately returned to broadcasting in the 1980s with WMCW in
16Harvard, where he covered basketball and football games; he
17continues as a broadcast volunteer today at WHIW-LP in Harvard;
18and
 
19    WHEREAS, Hans Rokus also serves as a Deacon and as the head
20of the Baptismal Ministry at Saint Mary Catholic Church in
21Woodstock; and

1    WHEREAS, The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held
2on May 6, 2017 at Redbird Arena in Normal; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5congratulate Hans Rokus on his coaching and broadcasting career
6and applaud his selection for the Illinois Basketball Coaches
7Association Hall of Fame; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Hans Rokus as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
