AMENDMENT TO SENATE RESOLUTION 1397

2    AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend Senate Resolution 1397 by
3replacing everything after the heading with the following:
 
4    "WHEREAS, According to new research from the United
5Nations, growing antimicrobial resistance linked to the
6careless disposal of drugs and some chemicals is one of the
7most worrying health threats today; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Studies have linked the misuse of antibiotics over
9the last several decades to increasing resistance, but the role
10of the antibiotic disposal has received little attention; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Improvements in the use of medically important
12antibiotics will help maintain these important tools for
13disease treatment and control; and
 
14    WHEREAS, United Nations environmental scientists warn that

1careless disposal of antibiotics could produce antibiotic
2resistant bacteria; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Solving the issue will mean addressing the
4disposal of antibiotic pharmaceuticals; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the U.S.
7Congress to review existing federal laws for the disposal of
8unused antibiotics and to pass new laws to prevent the creation
9of antibiotic resistant bacteria and to fund research into the
10treatment of, and creation of, new drugs to fight antibiotic
11resistant bacteria; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13delivered to President Donald Trump, U.S. Senate Majority
14Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck
15Schumer, U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, U.S. House of
16Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and all members
17of the Illinois Congressional Delegation."
