SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of George W. Black Jr. of Carbondale, who
4passed away on August 28, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Black Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York on
6April 1, 1930; he served in the United States Marine Corps
7during the Korean War; he earned a bachelor's degree from Saint
8Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, a master's degree in
9chemistry from St. John's University in New York, and a
10master's degree in library science from Columbia University in
11New York; he married Katherine Mary McKenna in Flushing, New
12York on March 3, 1962; and
 
13    WHEREAS, George Black Jr. served at Southern Illinois
14University Carbondale as a full professor and director of the
15science library at Morris Library for 22 years; and
 
16    WHEREAS, George Black Jr. volunteered and served on the
17board of the Carbondale Public Library; he enjoyed the beauty
18of Southern Illinois; he was a devoted fan of the men's and
19women's Saluki sports teams; during retirement, he volunteered
20with Habitat for Humanity; he was a loving husband, father, and
21grandfather; and

1    WHEREAS, George Black Jr. was preceded in death by his
2wife, Katherine; and
 
3    WHEREAS, George Black Jr. is survived by his children,
4James (Marian Lee) Black, Kathleen (James) Buckley, and Mary
5Black; and his grandchildren, Bridget Buckley, Cecilia
6Albert-Black, Gabriel Black-Planas, and Ainona Black-Planas;
7therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10George W. Black Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to his
11family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of George Black Jr. as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
