SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Gloster Van Richardson of Chicago, who
4passed away on February 27, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gloster Van Richardson was born in Greenville,
6Mississippi on July 18, 1942; he played college football at
7Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Gloster Van Richardson was drafted to play for the
9Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL in 1965; he ultimately played
10wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Dallas Cowboys,
11and the Cleveland Browns; he became a two-time NFL Superbowl
12champion while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1970 and
13the Dallas Cowboys in 1971; in all, he played in 92
14professional games, catching 92 passes for 1,976 yards and 18
15touchdowns; and
 
16    WHEREAS, After playing in the NFL for 10 years, Gloster Van
17Richardson returned to Chicago and worked as a physical
18education teacher for 25 years; he was the football coach at
19Kennedy-King College in Chicago, becoming one of the first
20football coaches at the City Colleges of Chicago; he taught
21football fundamentals to students from the Englewood Community
22and throughout the Chicago area; and

1    WHEREAS, Gloster Van Richardson worked as the executive
2assistant for the then-president of the Cook County Board, the
3late John H. Stroger; he worked there for 12 years until his
4retirement; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gloster Van Richardson was a citizen of the City
6of Chicago for over 50 years; he was an advocate for the people
7and had strong ties to his community, especially the Southside;
8he was passionate and dedicated to his athletes and gave his
9all to help others; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Gloster Van Richardson was a devoted husband and
11an adoring father and grandfather; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Gloster Van Richardson and extend our sincere condolences to
15his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Gloster Van Richardson as an
19expression of our deepest sympathy.
