SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Jeffrey Gene Givens of Peoria, who
4passed away on June 24, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens was born in Peoria to Homer "Al"
6Givens and Bertha L. (Kickel) Givens on April 22, 1945; he
7attended Princeville schools and graduated in 1963; from his
8first marriage, he had two daughters; he married Paula J.
9Applegate on March 15, 2019; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens joined his father's business,
11Givens Machine Co. Inc., where he served as a worker, partner,
12and owner for 43 years; he retired in 2006; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens was a member of the
14Akron-Princeville Volunteer Fire Department; he also held a
15special deputies commission from the Peoria County Sheriff's
16Department for several years; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens was interested in nature and
18history; he was a member of several plant and animal
19societies, mostly natural plants of Illinois, and helped
20create several natural prairies in central Illinois; he
21studied his family history and was a member of the Sons of the

1American Revolution, the Sons of the War of 1812, the Sons of
2Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the Sons of Confederate
3Veterans; he was the first camp commander of the Sons of Union
4Veterans of the Civil War post in Peoria; he also joined
5several reenactor groups and gave talks to schools and
6historical groups about the Civil War era; he was a lifelong
7member of the Princeville Masonic Lodge #360, where he
8achieved 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens enjoyed hiking, camping,
10backpacking, mountain climbing, bird watching, traditional
11archery shooting, skeet shooting, competitive pistol shooting,
12muzzleloading, and spending time outdoors; he studied
13different martial arts and finally attained a 4th-degree black
14belt in Japanese Wado Ryu Karate; he then taught karate for
15many years; he also developed an interest in music, mostly
16older folk music, and learned to play banjo and guitar; after
17obtaining and putting back together his grandfather Ellis
18Givens' fiddle, he learned how to play at the age of 73; he
19enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens was preceded in death by his
21parents; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Givens is survived by his wife, Paula;
23his sister, Sally (Richard) Cloyd; his brother, Erik Givens

1(Deb); his daughters, Carrie Louise Givens (fiancé, Roger
2Monke) and Jennifer Marie (James) Curtis; his grandchildren,
3Olivia Ruth Combs, Taylor Marie Roberson, and Jeffrey James
4Curtis; and his Westie, Holly; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Jeffrey Gene Givens and extend our sincere condolences to his
8family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
9further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Jeffrey Givens as an expression of
12our deepest sympathy.
