| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Harry Miller Stern of Bloomington, who | 4 | | passed away on January 31, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Harry Stern was born in Normal to David and | 6 | | Gertrude Miller Stern on May 14, 1940; he graduated from | 7 | | Washington School and Bloomington High School; he attended the | 8 | | University of Illinois for a year and then transferred to the | 9 | | University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in | 10 | | Business; he was also a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity; he | 11 | | married Marlys Immke in Springfield on August 28, 1970; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Harry Stern helped manage the family furniture | 13 | | store and worked in partnership with his father and two uncles; | 14 | | the Stern family operated their furniture business on Main | 15 | | Street and, later, on Veterans Parkway, for more than 80 years; | 16 | | and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Harry Stern served as treasurer and as a board | 18 | | member of Moses Montefiore Temple for 15 years; he was a member | 19 | | of the Senior Professionals at Illinois State University, the | 20 | | TOC Club, and the United States Army Reserves; he served on the | 21 | | boards of Bloomington's Miller Park Zoo and the Illinois | 22 | | Symphony Orchestra; he also served as a member of the national |

| 1 | | board of directors of the Eiteljorg Museum of Native Americans | 2 | | in Indianapolis, Indiana; he was a supporter of the arts at the | 3 | | Krannert Center at the University of Illinois; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Harry Stern was an admirer of the arts, especially | 5 | | Native American Art; he and his wife traveled to the southwest | 6 | | often; he also enjoyed swimming and sailing and playing tennis | 7 | | and golf; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Harry Stern is survived by his wife, Marlys; his | 9 | | sons, Andrew and Philip; his daughters-in-law, Brenda and | 10 | | Carolyn; his grandchildren, Hazel, Sam, and Silas; his sisters, | 11 | | Sybil Stern Mervis and former Mayor Judy Stern Markowitz; | 12 | | therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 15 | | Harry Miller Stern and extend our sincere condolences to his | 16 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 17 | | further
