| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Lung cancer is caused when cells grow at an | 3 | | accelerated rate and do not die, as normal
cells would do; | 4 | | instead, they continue to grow and form a group of abnormal | 5 | | cells called a
tumor; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both | 7 | | men and women; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Lung Cancer is often caused by smoking, but | 9 | | chances of developing this type of
cancer increase with family | 10 | | history or with exposure to secondhand smoke, asbestos, radon | 11 | | gas,
or high air pollution; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Each year, more people die from lung cancer than | 13 | | colon, breast, and prostate cancers
combined; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death | 15 | | and the second most diagnosed cancer
in both men and women in | 16 | | the United States; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today's smokers smoke fewer cigarettes than those | 18 | | 50 years ago, however, they are at
higher risk of developing | 19 | | lung cancer; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Lung cancer has the lowest 5-year survival rate of | 2 | | common cancers (breast, prostate, and colorectal) at 17%; and | 3 | | WHEREAS, Although lung cancer has the highest death rate of | 4 | | any cancer, in 2015, it received a
disproportionately low | 5 | | amount of federal research funding; in total, an estimated | 6 | | $1.012 billion
was spent on breast cancer research, $350 | 7 | | million on prostate cancer research, $315 million on
colon | 8 | | cancer research, and only $265 million on lung cancer research; | 9 | | and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The fight against lung cancer occurs on multiple | 11 | | levels, including education, outreach,
and policy efforts; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Increased coordination among all stakeholders, | 13 | | including federal and state
governments, providers, patient | 14 | | groups, community leaders and organizations, the public,
| 15 | | business, and researchers, is critical to promote the | 16 | | prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung
cancer; | 17 | | therefore, be it
| 18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the month | 20 | | of November 2016 as Lung Cancer
Awareness Month in the State of | 21 | | Illinois.
