1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are
3 pleased to honor Coach Larry Smith as he is inducted into the
4 Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of
5 Fame; and
6 WHEREAS, Coach Smith has participated in more than 1,600
7 games while coaching at Kaskaskia College; and
8 WHEREAS, Coach Smith defines his proudest memory as being
9 the coach to a number of students who have went on to become
10 lawyers, doctors, judges, engineers, teachers, and nine
11 players who have gone on to play Major League Baseball,
12 including pitcher Bryan Eversgerd, who is currently playing
13 for the San Diego Padres; and
14 WHEREAS, Coach Smith came to Kaskaskia in 1966, where has
15 complied a career record of 744-871; and
16 WHEREAS, Coach Smith has always made education the top
17 priority, stressing that earning a college degree comes first
18 with his players; and
19 WHEREAS, Coach Smith is a native of Decatur and an alumni
20 of Eastern Illinois University, where he graduated in 1959;
21 and
22 WHEREAS, Coach Smith has seen Kaskaskia win six
23 conference championships, a Region 24 state tournament, and
24 six sectional titles; and
25 WHEREAS, Coach Smith has a long list of achievements,
26 both on and off the field, including: Chairman of the
27 Illinois Junior College Baseball Committee in 1982 and 1983
28 and again from 1991 through 1994; coach of the North Team at
29 the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival in Houston, where his squad
30 won the bronze medal; Smith has scouted for the Kansas City

1 Royals and spent the last four years as a recommending scout
2 for the St. Louis Cardinals; he was head coach of the south
3 junior college All-Stars in both 1982 and 1994 and has
4 authored a baseball scorebook; and
5 WHEREAS, Coach Smith has seen the completion of a
6 baseball field at Kaskaskia that many consider to be one of
7 the State's best; Coach Smith is recognized for building the
8 complex entirely without school funds; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 commend Coach Larry Smith for his years of dedication to
12 Kaskaskia College, and congratulate him upon his induction
13 into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association
14 Hall of Fame; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to Coach Larry Smith.
