1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, WBEZ in Chicago is the one of the most listened
3 to and listener supported public radio stations in the
4 country; and
5 WHEREAS, We owe it all to Carole Rita Nolan, President
6 Emeritus of WBEZ, who established the Public Radio System in
7 Chicago in 1972, shepherded the independent status of 91.5 FM
8 from the Chicago Board of Education in 1990, and presided
9 over the September, 1995 opening of the station's glorious
10 new facility at the newly refurbished Navy Pier; and
11 WHEREAS, Carole earned her Bachelor in Arts and Masters
12 in Arts from DePaul University; Carole has taken post
13 graduate classes at California State University, Stanford
14 University School of Business, and the University of
15 Washington; and
16 WHEREAS, Carole established the Cluster System of Closed
17 Circuit Television in Chicago, an instructional program used
18 for inner city students, cited by the RAND Corporation as the
19 best in using television as a teaching tool; and
20 WHEREAS, Carole is a member of National Public Radio;
21 Chicago Women in Broadcasting; the Economics Club of Chicago;
22 the Bright New City Committee; and The Chicago Network; and
23 WHEREAS, Carole serves on the Public Radio International
24 Board, the DePaul Alumni Education Council, and the Illinois
25 Arts Alliance Board; Carole has received many awards and
26 honors including Awards for Excellence in Children's
27 Programming from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the
28 Radio and Television News Director's Association Award for
29 Local News Excellence, the YWCA Excellence in Communication
30 Award, and the 1990 TELLY Award; and
31 WHEREAS, Carole Nolan has made the City of Chicago a

1 better place to live through the commitment of her time,
2 energy and effort; and she has made WBEZ a great radio
3 station through her hard work and enviable skills; therefore,
4 be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7 salute Carole Nolan for her years of dedication to public
8 radio, education, and the City of Chicago; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to Carole Nolan of WBEZ radio in Chicago, Illinois.
