 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, Professional social workers have  a  century  of
 3    experience  helping  individuals  and effecting social change
 4    that benefits everyone; and
 5        WHEREAS, Social work developed in  the  last  century  in
 6    response  to poverty, homelessness, mistreatment of prisoners
 7    and persons with mental illness, and the plight of widows and
 8    orphans; and
 9        WHEREAS, The first training classes  for  social  workers
10    began in 1898; and
11        WHEREAS,  Social  workers  have played key roles in every
12    major social reform movement, from settlement houses to labor
13    reform, from the New Deal to civil rights; and
14        WHEREAS, Many things we take for  granted  today,  Social
15    Security,  child  labor  laws,  the minimum wage, the 40-hour
16    work week, Medicare, unemployment insurance, humane treatment
17    of persons with mental illness,  came  about  because  social
18    workers saw injustice, acted and inspired others; and
19        WHEREAS,  Professional social workers continue to provide
20    valuable services in health and mental health, child welfare,
21    aging, and other areas; continue  to  increase  opportunities
22    for  all  members  of  society;  and continue to speak out on
23    behalf of the poor, the vulnerable, and the voiceless; and
24        WHEREAS, Professional social workers daily help alleviate
25    society's most intractable problems, working one-on-one  with
26    troubled  children  and  families, organizing communities for
27    change, performing cutting edge research,  and  administering
28    social programs; therefore, be it
29        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
30    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  in

 1    recognition  of professional social workers and all that they
 2    do to increase the well-being of individuals and society,  we
 3    recognize  1998  as Professional Social Work Centennial Year,
 4    and call upon members of  the  community  to  join  with  the
 5    social  work  profession  in support of appropriate programs,
 6    ceremonies, and activities honoring social workers, America's
 7    real heroes, celebrating 100  years  of  professional  social
 8    work.
