 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate mourn,  along
 3    with  her  family  and  friends, the death of Luphelia Bolton
 4    Stephenson of Chicago, Illinois; and
 5        WHEREAS,  Luphelia  Stephenson  was  born  in  Oglethorpe
 6    County, Georgia on July 5, 1910; she was the daughter of  Mr.
 7    and Mrs. Scott Bolton; and
 8        WHEREAS,  At  the age of fifteen Luphelia joined with the
 9    Dorsey Tabernacle Baptist Church of  Athens,  Georgia,  under
10    the  leadership  of  Reverend  C.S. Jackson; in 1938 Luphelia
11    made the decision to find opportunity in Chicago,  where  she
12    moved  and  made  herself  a new home; she joined the Pilgrim
13    Baptist Church under the pastorate of  Reverend  J.C.  Austin
14    Sr. in 1941; and
15        WHEREAS, On June 28, 1942 Luphelia married Mr. Leonard D.
16    Stephenson; and
17        WHEREAS,  Luphelia was active in her church and served as
18    a Deaconess President of the Gospel Chorus, President of  the
19    J.A.  Finney  Missionary  Society, member of the Helping Hand
20    Club, and was a leader of  the  Tuesday  Night  Prayer  Band;
21    Luphelia  was  also  active  in  the  National  Convention of
22    Baptist Choirs and  Choruses,  the  Bethlehem  District,  the
23    National  Baptist Convention, as well as many other religious
24    and civic organizations; Luphelia worked for the  Kurly  Kate
25    Corporation  for  over 30 years, and received many awards for
26    her hard work and service to the company; and
27        WHEREAS, Luphelia is survived by her three nephews  Rufus
28    Bolton,  Sam  Bolton, and William Bolton, along with his wife
29    Sara; her niece Margaret Hall and her  husband  William;  her
30    sister-in-law  Ethel  Bolton;  her godchild Junette A. Smith;
31    her dear friends Deacon and Mrs. Vernon  Baker;  as  well  as

 1    several relatives and friends; therefore, be it
 2        RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
 3    OF  THE  STATE  OF  ILLINOIS,  that  we  send  our  sincerest
 4    condolences  to the family of Luphelia Bolton Stephenson; and
 5    be it further
 6        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 7    presented  to  the  family  of  Luphelia Bolton Stephenson of
 8    Chicago, Illinois.
