 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Illinois  Senate  wish  to
 3    extend their sympathy to the family of Betty Shabazz upon her
 4    death; and
 5        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Shabazz  was  the  widow  of civil rights
 6    advocate Malcolm X; Betty Shabazz first her met  her  husband
 7    at  an  Islamic temple where he was speaking; in 1958 Malcolm
 8    called Betty and proposed, and they were  later  married;  in
 9    1965,  Mrs.  Shabazz  shielded her children from bullets that
10    tragically cut down her husband as he addressed  a  crowd  in
11    the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem; and
12        WHEREAS,  Betty  Shabazz  was  the  adopted daughter of a
13    Detroit couple; she attended Tuskegee Institute  in  Alabama,
14    where  she  studied  elementary education; she later made the
15    decision to attend nursing school at Brooklyn State  Hospital
16    in New York City; and
17        WHEREAS,  After  the  death of her beloved husband, Betty
18    Shabazz put forth all her  efforts  into  raising  their  six
19    children;  she pressed on and received her Master's Degree in
20    public health administration from Jersey City State  College,
21    and  her  doctorate  in  education  from  the  University  of
22    Massachusetts  at  Amherst;  she joined the faculty of Medgar
23    Evers College in Brooklyn in 1976; she held the  position  of
24    director of the office of institutional advancement until the
25    time of her death; and
26        WHEREAS,  Betty  Shabazz continued her husband's dream of
27    advancing the civil rights movement; she will continue to  be
28    a  role model to people across the nation as others take over
29    her cause; her name will  be  remembered  as  students  learn
30    about  our  nation,  and  we  honor  her  contribution to our
31    history; therefore, be it

 1        RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
 2    OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that  we  mourn,  along  with  her
 3    family,  friends, and the nation, the death of Betty Shabazz;
 4    and be it further
 5        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 6    presented to the family of Betty Shabazz of New York City.
