 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish  to  recognize  notable achievements in
 4    high school sports; and

 5        WHEREAS, On Saturday,  November  24,  2001,  the  Downers
 6    Grove South High Mustangs won their first State Class 8A Boys
 7    Football Championship in Champaign; and

 8        WHEREAS,   The   Mustangs   defeated  number  one  ranked
 9    Naperville Central by a score of 34 to 31 before a  crowd  of
10    10,509; and

11        WHEREAS,  The  game-winning seven-yard touchdown pass was
12    made with 38 seconds remaining on the clock; and

13        WHEREAS, Naperville Central's last possession resulted in
14    an interception by the Mustangs with 23 seconds left; and

15        WHEREAS, On the road to Champaign, the Mustangs  defeated
16    Belleville  East  High  School  by a score of 48 to 14, Fremd
17    High School by a score of 48 to 27, Sandburg High School by a
18    score of 31 to 14, and Maine South High School by a score  of
19    35 to 34 in overtime; and

20        WHEREAS,  After  starting the season with a record of one
21    win and two losses, the  Mustangs  won  11  games  in  a  row
22    including  an  overtime  defeat  of 2000 State Champion Maine
23    South; and

24        WHEREAS, The Chicago Tribune proclaimed,  "The  Underdogs
25    are Top Dogs!"; and

26        WHEREAS,  The  Mustang's  head  coach is John Belskis and
27    assistant coaches are David Burton, Brett Chilar, Terry Kent,
28    Paul Maggiore, Terry McCombs, Jack  McInerney,  Tony  Nevrly,
29    and Mark Wiggins; and

 1        WHEREAS, The members of the team include Pat Sathissarat,
 2    Mike  Sharp,  Mike  Cuzzone,  Khyam Masud, Kitt Kopach, Mitch
 3    Szczepaniak, Joe Wesley, Josh Wieties, Phil Lampugnano,  Matt
 4    Smogor,  Tom Christoff, Dustin Szczepaniak, Bob Dreveny, Kris

20    Arndt, Germaine Clifton, and Josh Blazek; therefore, be it

21        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
22    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23    we congratulate the Downers Grove South High School  Football
24    Team  on  winning  their  first  State Class 8A Boys Football
25    Championship; and be it further

26        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
27    presented  to  John  Belskis, the head coach of the Mustangs,
28    assistant coaches, David Burton, Brett  Chilar,  Terry  Kent,
29    Paul  Maggiore,  Terry  McCombs, Jack McInerney, Tony Nevrly,
30    and Mark Wiggins, and to each member of the Mustang  team  as
31    an expression of our esteem.
