SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General Assembly pays honor and respect to those who have served our country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Thomas William Hollis was born in Macoupin County on May 24, 1948; and

WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed as a rifleman to Vietnam on March 13, 1967; and

WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis attained the rank of lance corporal and was attached to the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Recon Battalion, B Company; and

WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis was killed in action in the Quang Tri Province of South Vietnam on January 28, 1968; and

WHEREAS, LCpl Hollis was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marksmanship Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal; his name can be found on Panel 35E, Line 54 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Route 16 in Gillespie from Route 4 to Kelly Street as the "LCpl Thomas W. Hollis Memorial Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of the name "LCpl Thomas W. Hollis Memorial Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to the family of LCpl Hollis, the Mayor of Gillespie, and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
