SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
ILCON Art. IV, Sec. 2.5 new
ILCON Art. V, Sec. 2

    Proposes to amend the Legislature Article and the Executive Article of the Illinois Constitution. Provides that a person may not be elected to the office of State Senator, the office of State Representative, or any single Executive Branch office for terms totaling more than 20 years in each office. Provides that service before the date of the adoption of the amendment shall be considered in the calculation of a person's service. Provides that any person in office at the time of the adoption of the amendment who meets the specified term limitation shall be allowed to complete his or her term of office.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
5SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that there shall be submitted to the
6electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general
7election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption
8of this resolution a proposition to amend Article V of the
9Illinois Constitution by changing Section 2 as follows:

THE LEGISLATURE

12    (ILCON Art. IV, Sec. 2.5 new)
13SECTION 2.5. TERM LIMITS.
14    A person may not be elected to the office of State Senator
15or the office of State Representative for terms totaling more
16than 20 years in each office. Service before the date of the
17adoption of this amendment shall be considered in the
18calculation of a person's service. Any person in office at the
19time of the adoption of this amendment who meets the term
20limitation set forth in this Section shall be allowed to
21complete his or her term of office.

THE EXECUTIVE

2    (ILCON Art. V, Sec. 2)
3SECTION 2. TERMS
4    (a) These elected officers of the Executive Branch shall
5hold office for four years beginning on the second Monday of
6January after their election and, except in the case of the
7Lieutenant Governor, until their successors are qualified.
8They shall be elected at the general election in 1978 and every
9four years thereafter.
10    (b) A person may not be elected to any single office of the
11Executive Branch for terms totaling more than 20 years in each
12office. Service before the date of the adoption of this
13amendment shall be considered in the calculation of a person's
14service. Any person in office at the time of the adoption of
15this amendment who meets the term limitation set forth in this
16subsection shall be allowed to complete his or her term of
17office.

SCHEDULE
20    This Constitutional Amendment takes effect upon being
21declared adopted in accordance with Section 7 of the Illinois
22Constitutional Amendment Act.
