| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of Dr. Richard J. Martwick IV, who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on November 5, 2024; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick born to Richard J. III and Frances | ||||||
| 6 | Wiercioch Martwick in 1929; he graduated from Fenwick High | ||||||
| 7 | School and attended the University of Detroit; he played on | ||||||
| 8 | the Detroit Titans football team and served as co-captain for | ||||||
| 9 | the team that tied for the MVC championship in 1953; he earned | ||||||
| 10 | his degree in education in 1954; he married Mary Ann Fogarty; | ||||||
| 11 | and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick joined the U.S. Air Force, where he | ||||||
| 13 | served as a first lieutenant and discovered a passion for | ||||||
| 14 | boxing, later becoming the Great Plains Heavyweight Champion; | ||||||
| 15 | and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick returned to Chicago, where he taught | ||||||
| 17 | English and coached the football team at Ridgewood High | ||||||
| 18 | School, serving as athletics director from 1969 to 1970; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick served as the Cook County Regional | ||||||
| 20 | Superintendent of Education from 1970 until the position was | ||||||
| 21 | dissolved in 1994, making his 24-year tenure the last to hold | ||||||

| 1 | that position; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick was presented with an Honorary | ||||||
| 3 | Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1977 by the University of | ||||||
| 4 | Detroit for his efforts to greatly enhance the progress of | ||||||
| 5 | education throughout a large and complex school system through | ||||||
| 6 | innovative programs, education for disabled students, and | ||||||
| 7 | inspiring leadership; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick had a huge heart, loved his family, | ||||||
| 9 | and was as loyal of a person as anyone could ever meet; he was | ||||||
| 10 | tough in body, tough in spirit, and tough in mind; he believed | ||||||
| 11 | in doing things the right way, following the rules and giving | ||||||
| 12 | 100%, and expected that in himself and others; most of all, he | ||||||
| 13 | was filled with pride for his entire family; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick was preceded in death by his parents | ||||||
| 15 | and his wife, Mary Ann; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Martwick is survived by his sons, Richard J. | ||||||
| 17 | Martwick V and Thomas (Nicole) Martwick, and his brother, | ||||||
| 18 | former Norwood Park Township Democratic Committeeman and | ||||||
| 19 | Secretary of the Cook County Democratic Party Robert F. | ||||||
| 20 | Martwick; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL | ||||||

| 1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 2 | Dr. Richard J. Martwick IV and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
| 3 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
| 4 | it further | ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 6 | presented to the family of Dr. Martwick as an expression of our | ||||||
| 7 | deepest sympathy. | ||||||
