| 1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General | ||||||
| 3 | Assembly pays honor and respect to those who have served our | ||||||
| 4 | country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate sacrifice for | ||||||
| 5 | our nation; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Robert Dale Herreid served as a | ||||||
| 7 | Specialist 5 in the U.S. Army with Detachment A-402P, Company | ||||||
| 8 | D, 5th Special Forces Group and was an advisor operating with a | ||||||
| 9 | mobile strike force company; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, On October 10, 1968, SSG Herreid's company was | ||||||
| 11 | ambushed by a large enemy force in the Co To Mountain area, | ||||||
| 12 | Chau Doc Province, South Vietnam; the company was forced to | ||||||
| 13 | fall back after suffering casualties and was then subjected to | ||||||
| 14 | heavy artillery bombardment; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, SSG Herreid was hit and killed during the ensuing | ||||||
| 16 | fire fight, and his unit could not evacuate his body as they | ||||||
| 17 | fell back; later searches of the battle area failed to locate | ||||||
| 18 | his remains; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Following the incident, the Army promoted SSG | ||||||
| 20 | Herreid to the rank of Staff Sergeant; he is memorialized on | ||||||
| 21 | the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | the Pacific; his name is also inscribed along with all his | ||||||
| 2 | fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in | ||||||
| 3 | Washington, DC; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, SSG Herreid was awarded the Purple Heart, the | ||||||
| 5 | National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, | ||||||
| 6 | the Vietnam Service Medal, the Army Presidential Unit | ||||||
| 7 | Citation, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and the Army Good | ||||||
| 8 | Conduct Medal; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 10 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
| 11 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Route 31 in | ||||||
| 12 | Batavia from Main Street south to Mooseheart Road as the "SSG | ||||||
| 13 | Robert D. Herreid Memorial Highway"; and be it further | ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
| 15 | is requested to erect, at suitable locations consistent with | ||||||
| 16 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
| 17 | giving notice of the name "SSG Robert D. Herreid Memorial | ||||||
| 18 | Highway"; and be it further | ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to the family of SSG Herreid, Batavia Mayor Jeff | ||||||
| 21 | Schielke, and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of | ||||||
| 22 | Transportation. | ||||||
