HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Tom Miller on his retirement from WJPF News Radio after nearly 50 years on the air; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller is a lifelong resident of Southern Illinois from Harrisburg, where he has been delivering news and entertainment on the radio to the people of Southern Illinois for decades; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller began his career as a music DJ in 1976 before eventually moving into news; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller has been the host of the WJPF Morning Newswatch on news radio in addition to serving as the program director for WJPF and WCIL-AM, and he has also served as operations manager for River Radio and its six regional stations; and

WHEREAS, Under Tom Miller's leadership, WJPF has received the Medium Market Station of the Year award and the Best Public Service Program award from the Illinois Broadcasters Association; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller received the Leaders Among Us Award from the Southern Illinoisan newspaper and the Seven Seals Award from the Illinois National Guard for his work supporting local service members; and

WHEREAS, Known for his humility, Tom Miller rarely drew attention to himself but instead highlighted others; throughout his career, he interviewed political leaders and community members from across the state and around the nation; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller has demonstrated significant civic engagement by previously serving on the board of trustees of the Bald Knob Cross of Peace and running for Williamson County Board of Commissioners in addition to his interviews with political leaders and community members; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller has hosted politicians, sports figures, rock and roll legends, community leaders, medical professionals, and members of every other profession in between as the anchor of WJPF Radio's Morning Newswatch program; and

WHEREAS, The people of Southern Illinois will surely miss Tom Miller's insightful interviews, commentary, and unmatched personality from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM Monday through Friday; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller's nearly 50 years of service to the radio industry in Southern Illinois has made him the region's top radio news anchorman; and

WHEREAS, Tom Miller will especially be remembered for his journalistic wisdom; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Tom Miller on his retirement, and we thank him for his nearly five decades of dedicated service to the people and communities of Southern Illinois as he has been a strong and steady voice guiding the region through good times and bad; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Tom Miller and River Radio as a token of our esteem and respect.
