SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive muscle weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles; and

WHEREAS, There are more than 30 distinct forms of muscular dystrophy, which vary in age of onset, severity, and progression and affect individuals across the lifespan; and

WHEREAS, All forms of muscular dystrophy are progressive and may lead to significant mobility limitations, loss of independence, and impacts on quality of life for individuals and families; and

WHEREAS, A comprehensive awareness month would ensure that individuals living with less common forms of muscular dystrophy are represented; and

WHEREAS, September is recognized nationally and globally as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month by leading health and advocacy organizations; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September 2026 as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month in the State of Illinois to raise awareness of all forms of muscular dystrophy and to encourage education, public understanding, and continued research related to the many subtypes of muscular dystrophy.
