| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS; Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental | ||||||
| 3 | condition characterized by challenges with social | ||||||
| 4 | communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors; | ||||||
| 5 | and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Symptoms of autism appear in early childhood and | ||||||
| 7 | vary widely in severity, ranging from needing substantial | ||||||
| 8 | support to living independently; and | ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Autism affects millions of Americans, with one in | ||||||
| 10 | 36 children having been diagnosed with autism; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Significant progress towards equality for people | ||||||
| 12 | with autism has been made over the years, driven in large part | ||||||
| 13 | by advocates who have worked tirelessly to bring the lived | ||||||
| 14 | experiences of individuals with autism to the forefront; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Despite this progress, people with autism | ||||||
| 16 | continue to routinely face unnecessary obstacles, including in | ||||||
| 17 | regards to securing employment and health care, and children | ||||||
| 18 | with autism still face bullying and barriers to education; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Autism Awareness Day provides an opportunity to | ||||||
| 20 | increase the understanding and acceptance of people with | ||||||

| 1 | autism; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The United Nations began recognizing April 2nd as | ||||||
| 3 | World Autism Day in 2007; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 5 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare April 2, | ||||||
| 6 | 2026 as Autism Awareness Day in the State of Illinois. | ||||||
