| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to recognize the celebration of the Lunar | ||||||
| 4 | New Year as a major holiday celebrated by Asian American | ||||||
| 5 | communities in Illinois, the United States, and around the | ||||||
| 6 | world; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the | ||||||
| 8 | year using the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar or a | ||||||
| 9 | variant; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year starts on the second new moon | ||||||
| 11 | after the winter solstice and falls between January 21 and | ||||||
| 12 | February 19 on the Gregorian calendar used in the United | ||||||
| 13 | States; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year began being celebrated in East | ||||||
| 15 | Asia and Southeast Asia more than 4,000 years ago; today, it is | ||||||
| 16 | observed worldwide among people of Bruneian, Chinese, | ||||||
| 17 | Indonesian, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and | ||||||
| 18 | Vietnamese heritage; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is known as Chinese New Year in | ||||||
| 20 | Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, Spring Festival in | ||||||
| 21 | China, Seollal in Korea, Agricultural Calendar New Year in | ||||||

| 1 | Taiwan, and Tet in Vietnam; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, While Lunar New Year celebrations vary in length | ||||||
| 3 | from culture to culture, ranging from three days to two weeks, | ||||||
| 4 | celebration commonalities include gathering with family and | ||||||
| 5 | friends, honoring ancestors and elders, watching and | ||||||
| 6 | participating in traditional dances, settling disputes, | ||||||
| 7 | exchanging gifts, and enjoying feasts; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year occurs in a 12-year cycle with | ||||||
| 9 | each year being represented by one of 12 animals from the | ||||||
| 10 | zodiac; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, The 2025 Lunar New Year is the Year of the Snake | ||||||
| 12 | with dual symbolism representing positive and negative | ||||||
| 13 | qualities ranging from good fortune, harvest, procreation, and | ||||||
| 14 | spirituality to cunningness, evil, terror, and threats; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, This year, the Lunar New Year will begin on | ||||||
| 16 | January 29, 2025; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 18 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 19 | we recognize the cultural and historical significance of the | ||||||
| 20 | Lunar New Year to Asian American communities, express our | ||||||
| 21 | deepest respect for Asian Americans and people throughout | ||||||

| 1 | Illinois and the world who celebrate the Lunar New Year, and | ||||||
| 2 | wish those who celebrate a happy and prosperous new year. | ||||||
