HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, providing a century of service to the residents of suburban Cook County and the City of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, originally named the Cook County Sheriff's Highway Police Department, was created when the first 32 Cook County Highway Police Officers were officially sworn in for duty in 1922; and

WHEREAS, Today, 100 years later, the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department is the third largest police department in the State of Illinois, with more than 500 sworn officers; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department's officers are state certified law enforcement officers charged with patrolling unincorporated areas of Cook County as well as assisting suburban police departments; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department's primary responsibility, as mandated by the Illinois State Constitution, is to provide police services to the 109,000 residents in the unincorporated areas of Cook County; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department has numerous specialized units that provide services to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies on a mutual aid basis, including the Investigations Unit, the Evidence Technician Unit, the Narcotics and Street Crimes Suppression Units, the Gun Team, the Bomb Unit, Emergency 911 Dispatch, 24-hour Warrant Desk, the Truck and Traffic Unit, the Community Engagement Unit, Emergency Services, Senior Citizen Services, and the Special Victims Unit; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department is the first and only police department in Illinois allowed membership to the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), assisting with search and rescue operations on land and water emergencies; and

WHEREAS, The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department works to provide the citizens of Cook County with well-trained officers who serve the community with dedication and pride; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department for its 100 years of service to the citizens of Cook County, and we wish the department continued safety and success as it moves into its second century.
